Europe finds cleaner fuel in trash - The Observer - article by Elizabeth Rosenthal
'Far cleaner than conventional incinerators, this new type of plant converts local trash into heat and electricity. Dozens of filters catch pollutants, from mercury to dioxin, that would have emerged from its smokestack only a decade ago. In that time, such plants have become both the mainstay of garbage disposal and a crucial fuel source across Denmark, from wealthy exurbs like Horsholm to Copenhagen's downtown area'.

A social enterprise scheme created by Water Power Enterprises - We intend to develop 'low head' hydro sites using the Archimedian screw which will be installed adjacent to suitable river weirs. The water will run from above the weir, down the screw and turning it, returning to the river just below the weir. - Simple proven technology - We aim to save approx 6,500 tonnes of carbon emissions per year by installing around 5MW of renewable energy by 2015. This is equivalent of saving 18 million car miles per year and suppling upwards of 10,000 homes. To read the full report on the h2oPE website, please click HERE

Some facts and figures
• The production of one kilogram of beef requires 16 thousand litres of water. There is a huge variation around this global average. The precise footprint of a piece of beef depends on factors such as the type of production system and the composition and origin of the feed of the cow.
• To produce one cup of coffee we need 140 litres of water. This, again, is a global average.
• The water footprint of China is about 700 cubic meter per year per capita. Only about 7% of the Chinese water footprint falls outside China.
• Japan with a footprint of 1150 cubic meter per year per capita, has about 65% of its total water footprint outside the borders of the country.
• The USA water footprint is 2500 cubic meter per year per capita.
