TEV visit to WESTMILL WIND FARM - OPEN DAY - SATURDAY JUNE 19TH
The Energy Group from Transition Evesham Vale arranged a visit to an Open Day at Westmill Windfarm near Swindon on Saturday 19 June. Westmill Windfarm is a co-operative wind farm, and the first in the south of England which gave local people an opportunity to invest in the production of renewable energy. It has 2374 members who financed five wind turbines. Since its commissioning in March 2008 it has produced 12 million kWh of electricity per year, enough to power around 2,500 households. This generates an income of around £1 million per year. Visitors learned that a wind turbine with a capacity of 3 MW pays off the energy expended in its manufacture and assembly within 6 months. The co-operative contributes 0.5% of its income (£5000 / year) to Westmill Sustainable Energy Trust (WeSET). The trust provides resources, and support to local schools, colleges and community groups. Several schools participated in the Open Day with musical performances, art and craft displays; and a competition to name the turbines! The Energy Group from TEV see this as a potential model for local renewable energy in the face of increasing energy costs and climate change impacts. Westmill’s success demonstrates that local people can co-operate to achieve what our politicians talk about. ‘We returned inspired by what we saw and heard’, said Steve Martin from TEV.

Tuesday March 23rd 2010
Transition Evesham Vale held the first showing of 'In Transition' The Movie.
As a completely non partisan group TEV was very kindly loaned the facilities of the Methodist Church in Evesham to house the event. An introduction was given by Robin Walker the chair and facilitator of TEV, which was followed by questions and answers related to the Transition Movement. After the film was shown visitors were invited to discuss issues relating to the film and how we could envision changes in the Vale of Evesham in the years to come. People separated into smaller groups and discussed details under the separate headings of Transport, Food, Energy and general Awareness.
Following the success of our first film show we intend to repeat the experience again in the months to come. If you would like to sign up to view the Transition Movie at the next Event we arrange, please click HERE
